History

In the summer of 2007, five families began meeting to share their visions and develop plans for a new school for the Greenwood area. Three main guiding principles provided direction for the new enterprise:

  • The school would be independent and accountable to parents as parents are ultimately responsible for their children’s education.
  • Academic integrity would not be compromised. A rigorous college preparatory education would be provided.
  • A Christian education in a warm nurturing Christian environment would be provided.

Mrs. Joan Gore was hired as principal in the summer of 2007 to make preparations for the school. With a spirit of anticipation, two key developments occurred: curriculum was developed and teachers who were willing to pour themselves into the ministry of PCAG were hired. The Steering Committee, after researching governance options, decided to use Carver’s Policy Governance method, and board policies were developed. The school was incorporated as a 501c3 corporation in the fall of 2007.

After contacting multiple churches and researching other location options, the Steering Committee met with representatives from Hyde Park Baptist Church. The congregation was excited about having a school in its facility and within a few weeks, details of the relationship were finalized. Enrollment began in February 2008, and the school opened its doors in August of 2008 to 36 students in K4 through 12th grade!

By God’s grace, enrollment has grown each academic year with an annual increase averaging about seven new students per year. Generous and faithful giving by parents and friends of the school allowed us to eliminate our initial $192,000 debt on August 04, 2017. Generosity has characterized the families and supporters of the school, with over $1,000,000 in total donations given by the end of 2017.

From its inception, Palmetto Christian Academy of Greenwood has been committed to making its education accessible to as many families as possible. Our tuition assistance program provides need-based scholarships to approximately 25% of our families. Over the years, these scholarships have enabled many children to access a quality, Christian education who would not have been able to attend without such assistance.

PCAG became a member of the Association of Christian School International in its first year. Just three short years later, in 2010, PCAG achieved accreditation by SC Independent Schools Association and SACS. A site visit for AdvancEd accreditation is scheduled in March of 2018, and accreditation by that body, as well as ACSI is anticipated after that visit.

By 2017, PCAG had a total of 16 graduates, its enrollment had risen to 92 students, and the faculty had grown from 11 to 21 teachers. This year, 43% of teachers hold advanced degrees. The average SAT score in 2017 was 1253. In 2017-2018, a total of 6 sports teams were competing. A total of 6 extracurricular activities were offered to students. A licensed, full-day K3 and K4 program has been offered since 2012.

In June 2017, Mrs. Gore requested to return to the classroom. The board approved this request, and after a thorough search process, we were pleased to welcome Mr. David Douglas as Head of School. Mr. Douglas has over 25 years of service in Christian education as a teacher and administrator.

After ten years of growth, it has become clear that we have outgrown our current facility and will have to find a new location to accommodate future growth. We will always be thankful to Hyde Park Baptist Church for their hospitality. We plan to move to our new facility at Grace Community in the summer of 2018.

As we begin our second decade of ministry in the Greenwood community, we are excited to see what the Lord has in store for us!
